The colour of the Marsanne is electric - a strong straw hue with flecks of green as it catches the light. The nose has delicate white flowers, candle wax, cantaloupe and honeyed fresh-cut apple.
The palate has wonderful depth and flavour, yellow and white stone fruits intertwined with the plush, creamy otolosis of sur-lees oak ageing. The focus and energy of the wine is outstanding, the peach, honeydew melon, apricot and white mushroom flavours layer around a beam of lemon curd and bright, white stonefruit that holds in the mouth impressively with silken texture.

The 2017 vintage was unbelieveable for Rhône varieties in the Hunter Valley - these were amongst the best performers amongst what was a stellar cast of white fruit batches. Marsanne and Voigner from our estate vineyard, with thick golden skins, held their nerve through some very hot days just before harvest. 'Rogue' Marsanne vines scattered throughout our Semillon rows were tagged early in the year, and were the last white vines to be picked along with the Viognier in mid Feburary.
This wine is the ultimate in small-batch, minimalist winemaking. We selectively hand-pick the very best Marsanne from 'rogue' vines throughout our 'Field of Mars' property, before whole-bunch pressing and racking the juice into barrel without settling. For 2017, we used two second-fill DAMY hogsheads, fermenting the juice in barrel before ageing and lees-stirring in the very same oak. In July, these barrels were blended and estate bottled without fining or filtration.
