A remarkable vintage, with perfect conditions from Spring right through Vintage. Veraison and fruit set conditions were optimal. The weather played its part, blessing the Hunter Valley with gentle rainfall throughout Spring with good ground moisture, then bright sunshine throughout harvest. Some say the “Vintage of the Century”. We’ll see – time will tell. 2011 will be hard to beat, but if any Vintage will, this is the one.
After vintage experience with Paul Jaboulet in the Rhone Valley (France), and having been able to observe the making of “La Chapelle” close-hand, this winemaking incorporates similar Rhone Valley techniques for flavour complexity and palate length. Sourced from a Heritage-listed old dry-farmed Hunter Valley vineyard, the “Kester” grapes are fermented with a trace of Viognier in open vats for 4 weeks, with plunging by hand. It is matured for 20 months in a mixture of fine French oak barriques.
This wine expresses all of the signature Kester elements: super-rich blood-plum and cherry, plus the dense and broody aromas of inky aniseed, cassis and dark chocolate. Deluxe French oak is there too, adding beautifully to the gentle tapestry of aroma, from the initial charm at the beginning to the perfumed allure at the finish.
On the palate, Kester's strong black-fruit core melds into silken tannins with superb balance and length, yet is surprisingly dynamic, with riveting core of fresh black-fruit brightness and tightness that will last for many, many years. This wine (particularly from this great Vintage) is all about structure, showing an amplified level of fruit intensity yet with gentle plush tannin depth at the same time: the steadfast measure for a classic Hunter. Everything is there, very true to the Kester style, with a reserve and tension that will greatly reward those with patience.
Cellaring for 10 + years is recommended, with 20 years optimal.
Our flagship wine, from the already legendary 2014 Hunter Valley harvest. Sourced from a single old-vine Shiraz vineyard, this wine brims with energy.
