Epogée has a charming aromatic signiature - rich musk and jasmine perfumes fill the glass from the first to the last moment, with bold nectarine/golden peach juiciness at its core. The palate is all about plushness and texture, with this riot of ripe fruits combining to create strong velvet depth, and deliciously soft beeswaxy mouthfeel. The extra dominance of Marsanne and Roussanne in the blend delivers macacamia-like creaminess, and fine French oak bookmarks everything with seamless complexity. One year of bottle age is highly recommended to allow Epogèe to show it's true magic.
Drink now - 2022
The 2017 vintage was unbelieveable for Rhône varieties in the Hunter Valley - these were amongst the best performers amongst what was a stellar cast of white fruit batches. Marsanne and Voigner from our estate vineyard, with thick golden skins, held their nerve through some very hot days just before harvest. 'Rogue' Marsanne vines scattered throughout our Semillon rows were tagged early in the year, and were the last white vines to be picked along with the Viognier in mid Feburary.
The early Summer rain in the Hilltops region resulted in Roussane that was finer in expression and softer in acidity, intriguingly working together with the bold Hunter fruit with ideal harmony. .
This wine features three white Rhône varieties - Marsanne, Viognier and Roussanne - fermented individually in very small batches. Each variety is divided into three equal portions, with tank, barrel and skin contact fermentation; the result is nine micro-batches that showed real flair and character. Blending all of these together creates a single, highly expressive wine with many exotic elements.
