2009 Vintage season saw very good budburst and fruit set, followed by a hot dry January and late February rain. Cooler nights and milder weather continued through mid February and early March. Even ripening provided great colour and flavour.
Sourced exclusively from 80 year old dry farmed vines, this Shiraz is deeply influenced by the winemaking techniques of the Rhône Valley, where I spent two vintages with the Jaboulet Family.
A trace of Viognier is incorporated with the Shiraz; wild yeast initiates the open vat fermentation & vats are hand plunged. The wine is matured for 20 months in a mixture of fine French oak barriques to impart a fine, velvety oak support.
Six years after it's initial release, this Kester has matured very gracefully and is just entering its prime drinking years. The colour in the glass is a youthful crimson, clear and bright. The nose is a lovely, open bouquet of leather, clove, black pepper, aniseed, dried rose petals and chocolate.
This savoury balance is in full flight on the palate, a tight, wonderfully gentle tannin bead drives through the centre of the mouth whilst gamey roast meat, dark chocolate and plum flavours blanket the tongue. The freshness of this wine is wonderful, and leads to the impression that there are many years left in the tank... But it will take some self restraint not to decant and drink straight away. This release of only a hundred bottles, cellared here at the estate, has been well worth waiting for.
Extremely limited cellar release of 'The Kester' Shiraz. 1 bottle limit.
