The heart of the matter: The greatest mentor in my life is my father Doctor Harold William Tulloch, a viticultural scientist who – even at the age of 80+ years – is just as much a teacher to me now, as he was when I started as a winemaker almost 40 years ago.
The Latin translation for Doctor is “Teacher”, so this name befits him perfectly.
After Vintage 2011, Harry and I tasted through all of my Hunter Shiraz batches in barrel. With some cajoling, Harry selected the barrels that he felt were “his preference”. Each of these barrels showed the hallmark of a classic Hunter wine, intensity with currant-like, compact concentration – combining to form a sinewy, muscular powerhouse of flavour. “The Doctor” is slightly more Harry’s style than mine, for me this wine has profound gravity, father and son creating this wine together.
Colour : Deep, inky dense black / red.
Aroma : “The Doctor” is dark and broody, with very deep black-fruit aromatic concentration. The perfumed scent of black cherry and cassis, with a tang of currant, cola and graphite, builds imposingly, showing disciplined black-fruit purity and stature. In the glass this tightly-held black-core holds fast, finally allowing “sweeter” plum and black-cherry fruits, plus the spicy freshness of deluxe French oak to reveal.
Palate: Muscular and flavour-packed, “The Doctor” shows enormous fruit concentration, retaining a latent, tightly-wrapped black-fruit nucleus. The flavours are phenomenally energetic and long, with the inky fruit core riveted to equally dense tannins, with delicious spicy depth, savoury power and structural firmness.
This wine reminds me of my father, everything in balance with a profound essence of being.
James Halliday Wine Companion
Published July 2013: "A barrel selection of 140 dozen bottles made (without his realising the selection was his) by Dr Harry Tulloch, Keith Tulloch's father, and hence named in his honour. The purple colour is very deep, the wine particularly intense and long, and (in Harry's words) more 'lean and refined' than many of the best wines from this outstanding Hunter Valley shiraz vintage."
Published July 2013: "Dark chocolate is the dominant aroma and flavour here, with a pleasant sooty charcoal high-note. It's full-bodied, soft, fleshy and rounded, with lovely balance and silky, refined texture. Black fruits; fine tannins. (Selected for long aging potential. A tribute wine to Dr Harry Tulloch, Keith's father)"
